Monitor black out (8 posts)

Hi there!

For the last five or six weeks my monitor will make a clicking noise (like it is booting up) and the screen will disappear or turn black for a few seconds, then go back to where it was before. Sometimes it remains black until I touch the mouse, and the screen goes back to what I was doing previously. Apart from this it is working perfectly.

I have the settings set at :- turn off monitor NEVER likewise for the rest. It's more irritating than anything. Is there anything I can do to stop this please?

Re: Monitor black out

The clicking noise and indication of the issue sounds like you have some "arcing" happening in the monitor.

Monitors (at least those with a CRT - tube like a TV) run a high voltage to acellerate electrons to contact the screen. If the High Voltage coil (Called HT or high tension of legacy reasons) is allowing voltage to jump between links, its not being efficient and can cause the screen to black out.

As monitors get older, they collect dust and this can result in arcing.

The voltages inside a monitor are at lethal levels, so don't open the case but take it to an authorised repair center or your local computer repair man.

Moving the mouse may just cause enough movement on your desk to stop the arcing.

Anyway, get it looked at.

For safety, I'll warn again, DON'T LIFT THE COVER OFF A MONITOR. It can be at a minumum extremely painful and at a maximum lethal.

Nick

Hi Nick!

Thanks for the info. There's no question about dust, doing home renovations and all. I'll take it to the local computer guy.

Re: Monitor black out

Nick's suggestion that the "click" is due to high voltage arcing isn't very likely. It isn't plausible that moving the mouse would always cause just the right movement of the desk to fix a monitor arcing problem. No, your monitor is simply behaving EXACTLY like it would if it was (incorrectly) being told by the PC to go into power save mode.

Re: Monitor black out

Are you sure that the plug is connected to the video card properly and the retaining screws nipped up reasonably tight? Regards

Peter.

Re: Monitor black out

John,

Stick with getting your monitor looked at. It's quite possible that dust inside the monitor is causing marginal operation of its power-saving circuits, and that a prompt from the mouse is causing a reset of that condition - until the next time it malfunctions.

Nevertheless, if you have identified dust as being a problem with your monitor, then an occasional entry into standby mode is the least of your worries. I would be more (extremely) concerned about the fire hazard caused by dust and HT voltages.

Geoff Farrell
