2PC's using ADSL w/o networking (5 posts)

Hi,

I have two PC's running XP SP2 Home Edition. I have a phone line in the house that is terminated at two locations at either end of the house (same number). Is it possible to use the same broadband connection for both PC's via the phone lines? Would I just need to purchase another ADSL modem and apply the same settings as the first computer?

Currently one computer uses ADSL and the other uses dial-up via a second phone line (different number).

Thanks.

Hi !

Yes you can. You need your external adsl modem, a router/splitter to connect to the 2 and configure your additional computer as you have for your ADSL connection and bobs your uncle..

Hi!

No, you can't. You can't connect two ADSL modems to one phone line. It absolutely won't work. Not even if you have an uncle named Bob.

You could connect a wired or wireless LAN to the ADSL connection, and connect a number of PCs to it. Lots of people do that. But you wanted to know whether you can do it without networking of any sort. And the answer to that is definitive unequivocal non-negotiable no.

cheers

I stand corrected if I am wrong, I was thinking of 1 line, one modem, a router and 2 computers. But if Gordon says you cant do it this way, then I guess you can't. Personally I have not tried it, I just have a similar configuration with 2 computers, 1 modem, and I can.

cheers

Re: 2PC's using ADSL w/o networking

The only way you can do this without it coming under the official blanket of 'networking' is to get an ADSL modem that has dual USB & Ethernet interface. Run the USB to the computer located closest to the modem and run Ethernet to the computer which is further away.

The way I would be doing it though is getting a wireless ADSL modem router eg. D-Link DSL-G604T PRODUCT URL (http://www.dlink.com.au/Default.aspx?ArticleID=740)

Assuming that both of these computers are desktop PC's then add 2x wireless PCI cards to that (D-Link DWL-G520) PRODUCT URL (http://www.dlink.com.au/Default.aspx?ArticleID=290).

I am not sure of your level of experience in networking but I have set up a wireless network in my home, replacing my previous wired network. The quick installation guides that come with these Dlink products are quite comprehensive and very easy to follow. One other thing, so I am covering all possible concerns you have. If either of these PC's are new or newish and are still under a manufacturer's warranty you can buy USB wireless adaptors which will negate the need for you to either void your warranty or have these professionally installed.

I hope this has helped you out.

Cheers,

Andrew Parsons
