Possible Virus affecting Mozilla software only? (7 posts)

Hi People,

I'm not sure if I have a bug or not. I first had problems with Netscape 'freezing' (v8.1.2) - sometimes it would come good, sometimes not. Sometimes the screen would go blank white except for the blue title bar at the top. All other programs continue to function normally.

The frequency of this happening increased to the point of being within 30 sec of starting Netscape. One thing I did notice when shutting it down from the task manager is that the CPU usage by Netscape was high during a freeze (60-70) dropping back to almost 0 when/if the program came good again.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled Netscape - no luck. Dumped Netscape completely and tried Firefox - exactly the same problem. Whilst IE7 continues to work - well work as well as IE7 can...

Norton Internet Security 2006 (updated) finds no problems, nor do Adaware, Spybot S&D or Avast Virus Cleaner. Netscape's own spyware cleaner found six problems before freezing.

The problem began - I think - within the last few days. System: P4 3.2Ghx Gigabyte mobo, 1gb ram. XP SP2 (updated) any ideas?

thanks in advance

Hans

Re: Possible Virus affecting Mozilla software only?

Hans,

I run Firefox (Mozilla) and do not have a problem at all - never have had. Have you tried a disk clean-up? It could be that your system is clogged with junk files and this is creating the headache.

Re: Possible Virus affecting Mozilla software only?

Hi Dick,

Thanks for reply.

Yes, I did try that - 220mb of crap gone which can't hurt things of course. It didn't help with the problem. BUT... update:-

Firefox is now working fine (although I have some issues with it which are likely related to setup) and, to top it off, I had exactly the same sequence of problems on my laptop except that Firefox worked fine from first install. So I'm back up and working again but no wiser as to what caused the problem... on the plus side, I no longer get the annoying warnings from Ebay etc that I'm using an out of date or unsupported browser :)

One issue I have found with Firefox - I use the ATO site to do my BAS etc online. When I log in it opens a new window (both the login page and the new window are secure {https://} windows. The New window has the Title bar and the Tab bar but no menu bar - I need to print a page that opens in that window but can't access the menu to do it - I've been through the options but can't find any answer to this. It's not a huge issue as I can copy and paste the data but it's still an annoyance.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Regards,

Hans

Re: Possible Virus affecting Mozilla software only?

Hans,

Back up your bbokmarks to a file somewhere and then go to work. I would suggest trying to set all to the default settings and starting from there. Of course you could always remove/re-install Mozilla.

Select the page and Ctrl-P and see what transpires for a screen print. Of course you could always Prnt Scrn, Ctrl-C and paste into a word document the whole screen.

Re: Possible Virus affecting Mozilla software only?

I have something similar with Netscape 8.1.2 in that every 45 seconds or so it freezes for about 15 seconds. When I look at the Windows Task Manager/Performance window I see that the CPU usage is at 100% and when Netscape starts working again the CPUI usage has dropped to normal - 20 or 30%.

I have the Netscape security features enabled so I am wondering if that feature is causing the hassle while it 'protects' me.

And I want to keep using Netscape if I can because of the option to perform like IE as some of my bank websites won't operate with Netscape or Mozilla.

Re: Possible Virus affecting Mozilla software only?

Hi Ron,

Hmmmn, I hadn't thought of the Security features and unfortunately I've deleted Netscape of both my main machine and my laptop so I can't try it. My "freezes" tended to be more than 15 seconds though and it didn't always come back.

I hadn't noticed until I read your post that Firefox doesn't have the "view like IE" function - I haven't needed it since changing over but it certainly was a handy feature. I do have issues with the ATO website, but Firefox has updated twice since I last tried that site so maybe that issue is fixed...

I'd be interested to hear if you get a fix..

cheers, Hans

Re: Possible Virus affecting Mozilla software only?

Same thing happened to me after I installed Adobe Reader 8. Uninstalled both Netscape Browser & Adobe Reader. Reinstalled Adobe Reader first then Netscape. Everything appeared fine after that.Let me know if this fixes it.
