How to restore a system? (63 posts)

I need help in understanding System Restore. I know that in vague terms you put a CD and the factory settings are restored.

Can somebody help me first understand System Restore and also tell me how to do it. I would really appreciate it. Thank you

Dear Him,

First, you must understand that there is no "System Restore"

in Windows 9x. That started in Windows XP.

Your "you put a CD and the factory settings are restored" IS

correct, but what are you getting when you do that? You are

getting a system on that CD that was made 11 years ago when

Windows 98SE came out in 1999.

After the "restore" you have to add the hundreds of updates

and patches Microsoft issued from a site like here:

THEN you have to set up you internet connection.

THEN you have to tweak your settings to your liking with certain

icons on your desktop, etc.

THEN you have to install all of your programs all over again.

Now you know why computer repair shops charge so much money.

All of the above is a BIG time eater, which can take up a good

four to ten hours.

HOWEVER, there is a "silver lining" to this dark cloud. If

you do a few things and invest a few dollars, your future

restores can be done in a matter of MINUTES, not hours, AND

you can do it yourself. Those steps are:

On another computer, join http://radified.com and check out my

Find a copy of Norton Ghost 2003 or SystemWorks 2003 which

includes Ghost.

Copy all of your data files to another hard drive or to CD/DVD's.

Partition your hard drive into at least 3 partitions. C at 5

Gigs for Windows 98SE; D at 5 Gigs to install your programs to

(Some MS programs won't allow you to do that, but 99% of others

will, so just use the C for ones that INSIST on being in the C)

and E for the balance of your hard drive for all of your data

files, pictures, videos, income tax returns, etc....

Use Partition Magic:

Wipe your C clean with FDisk: http://bootdisk.com/readme.htm#howto http://bootdisk.com/txtfiles/usefdisk.txt

Install Windows 98SE

Install all updates.

Change your C Drive's__My Documents and aim it to the D

drive:

Install your programs on the D Drive.

Tweak your C to your liking.

Install Ghost 2003 and create Ghost DOS Boot Disks.

Make an image (using Ghost 2003 in DOS) of your C Drive to the

E partition AND to a CD. My batch files tell you how.

Every time you add a program, make a new Ghost image.

My C Drive takes under 4 minutes to restore and is identical to

the way it was the day the image was made.

Also, you MUST "CRC Check" the image (BOTH the one to your E Drive

AND the one Ghost burns to CD) before you can rely on it. A failed

image will NEVER restore. If it fails the check, just make a new

image right then and there.

BTW, I have been using Ghost 2003 DOS for the past 6 years with VERY

limited problems.
