What is Infrared Data Transfer?

Re: Infrared Data Transfer

Some portable devices - phones and pocket PCs - have Bluetooth (low powered radio) and some have infrared ports on them to exchange data with PCs without having to connect up any wires. Some laptops had infrared ports on them, but I've never seen a desktop PC that does standard. If you want an infrared port on a PC you can get devices that plug into either the IrDA connector provided on the motherboard (which will have to be enabled in the BIOS) or plugs into a USB port.

Re: Infrared Data Transfer

It enables sending data via infrared link and has been around for a while (it was on a laptop I bought 8 years ago).

The idea was you could send data between say a laptop and printer (or another laptop) without direct connection. Range was very limited (just a few feet) and had to be line-of-sight and data transfer was very slow compared to modern wireless standard. You can still find it on some Pocket Computers. I wouldn't see it as a major selling point in this day and age.

Re: Infrared Data Transfer

Don,

Infrared is a method of communication without wires.

For more detail go to www.google.com and type "Infrared Data Transfer".

Re: Infrared Data Transfer

Two infra red devices i.e. Laptop and mobile phone, can connect and transfer data between themselves via infra red link. Some printers are infra red enabled to permit wirless connection to laptops etc.
