My friend and I want to connect our two machines across the internet to play games. We've had it working for years over dial-up, but now we both have broadband and routers we're having trouble. I have a DLink cable router/firewall DI-8080HV (hanging off a cable modem), my friend's is a DLink dsl-302g/at ADSL modem/router.
From reading PC World I gather that we may need to setup a VPN. Is this correct, and if so how do we go about it? If not, what do we do?! Neither router has a manual to speak of.
Many thanks,
Sam Stevens

Re: Router config for gaming needed
http://portforward.com/cports.htm lists heaps of common ports that games and apps use. These ports must be opened in order for the games and apps to communicate. I assume that you know how to configure and open ports on your router. You may need to also enable "port forwading" on the respective ports to the respective computer that is playing the games. Also note that your friends' IP is not the one he sees in ipconfig but rather the router's IP. goto www.whatismyip.com for an easy way to find your IP out.]
Hope this helps

Re: Router config for gaming needed
Use OpenVPN which is an opensource software VPN solution. Follow the basic instructions. Should work for gaming.
http://openvpn.net/
It is not compatiable with Norton Internet Security. Works with McAfee and PC Cillan.

Re: Router config for gaming needed
Hi Sam
I use broadband myself, and my wife's computer is hooked to broadband through mine.
This is how it's done:
I run the connection through my computer via the USB connection, and then I run a small network cable up to a switch. This leaves seven more possible connections, one of which I run a cable to my wife's computer with. It's simple and inexpensive. I hope this helps.
Cheers,
jason
