No uninstall game exectable (3 posts)

I loaded up an old win 98 game Janes 688(I) Hunter Killer on my xp computer. The game runs and plays no probs.

However when i went to remove it there is no uninstall programs for it via the start programs buttons, or the Janes folder on the C drive and it is not showing as installed in the 'add/remove programs' folder in the control panel. How can I uninstall this program correctly, as I know it had a uninstall program when I play it on my Win 98 computer.

Re: No uninstall game exectable

Dear Gamer,

The first thing you could do is to install the game again, over the top of your existing one. Since most programs create uninstallers last, the install could have been interupted but still left a functioning game.

If this does not work, the next thing to try is a manual uninstallation, but this will involve at least looking at the registry (which can kill Windows if not done carefully). Firstly, erase the game files on the hard disk.

Secondly open RegEdit by going to Start>Run and typing "Regedit" in the path box. In Regedit, look at the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE arm of the tree, for a 'folder' titled the name of the game you want to remove (sometimes it's in a sub-branch titled with the name of the game's publisher). Once you are sure this IS the right 'folder', highlight it and select Delete from the Edit menu.

NOTE however, that the game may not have a registry entry. This will remove most traces of the game, though some shared files may be left unnecessarily.

HiGamer,

Edd's approach is logical, but somewhat dangerous if you're not confident with hacking the Registry.

My approach, is to download, & install JV16 Power Tools. Google it, it's a freebie. It will allow you to selectively uninstall/delete a program, and include all registry entries. It makes a compressed backup of deletions, just in case!
