I have a free copy of steel panzers from PC World June 04. I am running XP but when the zip wizard goes to unpack the files it comes back, unable to create directory: steel/steel; "access denied."
I have tried to manually create another folder but no joy.

You didn't say which file you were trying to unzip. Copy the entire zip file from the CD to a hard drive with at least 2GB of free space. Unzip both files. Do not take short cuts - ie. don't run the program directly out of your zip tool.
This is bad practice. After unzipping the install file and update, you can delete the original zip file. Now run the setup file by double-clicking the setup.

Have u tried creating a new folder via c:/unzipped if not then do it; try downloading the lastest version of WinZip via www.winzip.com or via July's issue of PC World
