Trojan Dilemma? (11 posts)

I committed a cardinal sin, I am normally vigilant when it comes to downloading .exe files over P2P's. To cut a long story short, I think I have a trojan or a worm of some description that keeps creating a folder "Sysdll" in my windows directory, this folder is full of zip.exe files (all 196K) & everytime I delete the folder, it reappears when I reboot.

Apart from the severe beating around my bald cranium, is there a solution to ridding myself of this pesky anomaly (preferably without the need for reformatting).

Cheers

Re: Trojan Dilemma?

According to Symantec, this is a worm called W32.HLLW.Bereb that spreads via P2P. It should be found and removed by your AV program. If you are not running an AV program (and you should be) then delete the folder and search / delete the following files and entries in the system registry:

"taskmanager" = "c:windowstaskmgr.com"
"svckernell" = "c:windowssvckernell.com"

Re: Trojan Dilemma?

Mark,

Spybot or Adaware should pick it up if it is a trojan.

I would examine one of the files and check the properties (right click) and try to determine the originator- You never know, it could be quite legitimate.

I would also do a search of your C drive for other unusual folders and check them out.

Hope this gives you some further options to research and they help you resolve your problem.

Re: Trojan Dilemma?

Hello Mark

Do yourself a big favour and download the trial version of TDS-3 from DiamondCS. plus the current data base. It is the worlds best trojan defence on the market.

Re: Trojan Dilemma?

Follow the instructions given by the anti-virus manufacturer or MS site. If there is a removal program then it's simple task but otherwise, you may have to delve into the registry keys to eliminate it from re-installing itself after every reboot.

Re: Trojan Dilemma?

Thanks to everyone for their responses, I truly appreciate it.

I took the savage approach & Fdisks my HDD and started from scratch and have upgraded my online protection considerably.

Cheers.
