Trash Or Treasure PC-Cillin (8 posts)

I have an out-of date version of Trend Micro PC-Cillin Internet Security installed on my Win XP PC. As it has expired, I have installed Avast! Antivirus and Comodo Firewall Pro to compromise for the loss of the Trend Micro Program. Is there any point to keeping the Trend Micro Program on my system if it has expired?

Re: Trash Or Treasure PC-Cillin

Greg,

Why retain it?

There's not much point in retaining 2 AV's as any AV slows your system down and two only doubles the delay.

The old AV will not pick up any new threats and who keeps using old viruses?

Re: Trash Or Treasure PC-Cillin

Indeed not. You should never have two AV progs running (or even installed) at the same time. As they both carry virus definitions, they are inclined to see each other as a threat. Perfectly OK to uninstall one and use another periodically though, as one may find something that the other misses.

IMHO there would be no reason to keep old copies of expired anti virus programs on your system.

I would attempt to do a complete uninstall as there could be things loaded by the old program that are still running in the background (loaded at startup) and using up resources. There could also be the chance that these remnants may cause "unexplained" conflicts in the future.

See if you can get an uninstaller from the Trend site. I know that a similar program is available for Norton/Symantec products. In the case of these products you really do need to clean out the remnants.

No.

Re: Trash Or Treasure PC-Cillin

You should get rid of PC-Cillin as there is no point in having it in your system.

Hope this helps

Re: Trash Or Treasure PC-Cillin

G'day Greg, There is no need to keep the old virus scan, uninstall it. The two systems can conflict and cause problems

Re: Trash Or Treasure PC-Cillin

Dear Greg,

I am not sure how far out of date but I thought I would take the time to explain how PC-Cillin has evolved beyond just Antivirus and Firewall software.

PC-Cillin is now far more than just Antivirus and firewall these days. One of the main benefits of the current version of PC-Cillin is that it monitors your web site usage and prevents any damaging sites from being accessed. A serious issue these days is that it is generally impossible to tell which websites will attempt to infect your PC with a Trojan. What was a good site yesterday, might have been infected with a Trojan and now be dangerous. PC-Cillin monitors the latest Web Reputation database and ensures the user is protected.

Once your PC is infected with a Trojan, everything from internet banking to online shopping will now become quite dangerous. The Trojan will be looking for access passwords and private information which it can then send back to the Trojan’s author to be used for malicious purposes.

There are many other features of PC-Cillin - parental controls, email safety scan, protection against rootkits, proactive intrusion blocking, anti-spam, two-way firewall, home network protection, website authentication, data theft prevention, free phone, email, chat support.

I hope this has helped

Adam
