Mac mini as server (3 posts)

hi,

I'm planning to buy a mac mini with Leopard Snow Server and I have the following questions:

1) if I'm running the server at home, and my ADSL modem disconnects and then connects again, do I have the same ip ? In other terms, if disconnections happen when I'm not at home, can I still easily access to my server ?

1b) Can I have some troubles if I run a server at home, (just for me and few friends) ? Let's say I have a normal ADSL connection.. if I run Leopard Snow Server, is the connection going to be unstable.. or can I have any other trouble with it ?

2) Can I play music from my server with iTunes without copying it on my laptop? I know I can sync iTunes on several mac, but instead of syncing (nad have multiple copies of files) can I just play the music directly from the server with my laptop iTunes (without local copy)

3) Can I sync the mac mini and macbook iTunes remotely ? If I'm not at home ?

4) Can I sync calendars without mobileMe ?

5) Can I play videos from the server filesystem ? Let's say I have some mpeg videos in a server folder, can I play them in streaming on my laptop if I'm not at home ?

6) Is mac mini enough quiet to run in my sleeping room ?

7) Can I use Snow Leopard Server as a normal desktop OS ? I mean, is there something I cannot do with OSX Server, and I can with OSX ?

8) Can I access to the desktop of my Leopard Snow Server from my laptop ? Can I control it remotely if I'm not at home ?

thanks

using Mac as mini server specifications

1a) Depends, but unless you are paying for a static ip, there will probably be some issues 1b) See 1a, but to me connection stability has more to do with the ISP. Server expects to have a static ip address, and will have problems if the ip address is constantly changing. 2) I believe that the answer is yes, but it is an iTunes feature that allows that, not the OS X Server Software 3) Don't know 4) Yes, but it can be difficult. Google calender seems to be a better option at this time. 5) Don't know, I haven't used this feature, although it is also probably dependent upon you ISP. For example, here in AZ, USA, I have qwest, which only allows a 768K upload, so that is the limit on my home server. 6) Yes 7) Mostly, but some apps, like Garage Band, iMovie, etc will not run on it. 8) Yes, through VNC for the desktop, and the server apps, but you will need to set up your port forwarding on your router, most likely.

mm...interesting
