I recently upgraded to directx 9.0 off the July 03 PC World CD and now some of my games no longer work. I suspect directx 9 is the problem. Is there any way I can go back to an earlier version of directx. Does anyone concur that this is the cause? If not any suggestions?
My OS is Windows 98 with service pack 1 update.
Thanks for your help
Phil

Re: Does Directx 9.0 intefere with games?
Hi Phillip,
I believe that DirectX 9 can cause problems, but I haven't used it enough to know if it 'stops games'.
I loaded it, tested it, and found it gave me a 20% performance drop. Luckily I was using XP Home, and 'System Restore' returned me to a faster, better machine. ( I don't understand how it did that, but I'm bloody impressed!)
Unfortunately, you have Windows 98. DirectX9 can't be uninstalled, and you have no 'System Restore'. A reformat and reinstall seem to be your only option if you aren't satisfied with it.
Cheers.

Directx 9.0 can be removed with a program called Directx9_uninstaller. You can then install an earlier version.
I had a problem with a game that insisted on Directx 8.0 to be installed and would have nothing to do with 9.0. Not sure where this file can be obtained, but I can send it to you if neccessary it being a faily small file.
Cheers,
Alan

If you're not satisfied with DirectX9, you can try installing an older version (say directX8.1). It simply overwrites the other DirectX9. This trick has worked for me.
