Processor is pinned at 100% (4 posts)

The processor on a friends computer is pinned at 100% all the time. I have scanned the drive for viruses and spyware in my PC using Norton 2004 and spybot. The process that is running is the system process. What can I check for? It is running w2k sp4. 256k ram and a celeron 533 processor.

Re: Processor is pinned at 100%

You have to explain what you mean by "pinned". Do you mean that it's busy 100% all the time? Try this. Go to Start, Run and type MSCONFIG. When the box pops up click on the Startup tab the remove anything which is not essential to have running in the background. To understand the MSCONFIG application go here and have a read http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/

Good luck

Re: Processor is pinned at 100%

Hi,

I encountered this type of problem. I looked at Windows XP Task Manager CTRL+ALT+DEL and looked at which process was using all the free processor cycles.

From memory I think it was a process called "bridge". A check on the net revealed that it was malware and suggested that it be gotten rid of.

After removing the process from the startup list via MSCONFIG and rebooting I was able to totally remove it and the processor utilisation value dropped back to normal levels.

Hope this helps.

Re: Processor is pinned at 100%

I experienced the same problem with my AMD 1.7Ghz W2k 256Mhz.

I found an virus attached to the file svchostp32.exe. The antivirus couldn't delete the file, I deleted it in safe mode with dos commands. Now the system is up and running perfect.
