I'm running XPSP2 with a Gigabyte Socket A Motherboard GA-7VA. Ancient, I know, but Ive recently and suddenly lost all sound. Device Manager shows the yellow sign alongside AC-97 Sound Device and tells me that Windows cannot open it because it might be in use. No icon in the task bar, either. Google and MS knowledge base confirm I'm not alone with Code 10 but despite thousands of hits nothing has come up with a solution that works. Plenty of offers to stump up money for updated AC-97 drivers, but I'd like to know if that's the answer. Running the original Giga. Utility CD doesn't do anything good,so my simple mind tells me that's not the problem. True or False ? Should I put in a separate sound card and by-pass the problem ? Thanks for any help. Cheers

Grab the latest Via 4 in 1 here - http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/Motherboard/Driver_Model.aspx?ProductID=1409 and see if that improves matters.

p.s. Don't ever pay for drivers, never necessary
Code 10 error -Win XP
G'day I would simply right click on the sound card in device manager and uninstall it. Then right click on any device and “scan for hardware changes”. It will autodetect the sound card. If it asks for drivers, just point it to the CD

Jasmine, Firstly download the
Jasmine,
Firstly download the latest drivers from Gigabyte.com.tw.
The locate the device in your device manager, and within the drivers tab locate the files (drivers) which are currently installed for this device.
Write the locations down, manually uninstall the device, then manually remove the files.
This will ensure windows is not defaulting back to the current installed drivers which may in this case be corrupt or the incorrect ones for this device.
After removing, instilling and the device and drivers - extract the downloaded drivers (if required, but do not install at this stage). Reboot the machine.
Once the system reboots, it 'may' discover the device without drivers. Do not allow the system to automatically install the device - point it to the location where the new drivers have been extracted to (unzipped, or downloaded) and install.
This should fix the problem.
Remember to make sure you manually uninstall and remove the drivers currently installed (normally located in the Windows/System32/drivers location) however may not be the case. Dont forget to reboot after the removal.
Hope this helps.

Code 10 Error - WinXP
Thanks everyone for your interest and advice. Chris: the Giga site has only one VIA 4 in 1 driver entry, the same as the one that came with my motherboard, but I installed it anyway and said yes-to-all in the hope that if I had a dodgy driver it would be over-written and all would be OK again. No such luck!
Doug: Sorry; already tried, but no go!
Micky: Can't understand your reference to "manual removal", unless on-board sound is physically removable and not part of the M/B circuitry. Showing my ignorance here again! I tracked down the AC97 audio drivers (17 of them) via System 32, but they refuse to be deleted.
One thing I have achieved, after clicking, ticking and unticking practically everything in sight that looked remotely relevant is a Device Manager reference to a C-Media WDM audio device that is working, or so it says. No yellow marks anywhere but no sound anywhere either
My limited instinct such as it is, tells me to install a separate sound card and put the money saved on Panadols towards its cost!
I'll keep you posted if you don't mind.
Regards
Code 10 Error Win XP No Sound
As promised, here's my follow-up. Unfortunately still no sound. I've disabled on-board sound (AC 97)in the BIOS and added a separate sound card: a Ritmo PCI Chipset CMedia CM 8738. A cheapo, but I felt any sound would be better than deafening silence! Device Manager tells me everything is working fine, but in Sounds and audio devices I'm told there is no audio card. How come? BTW: No more Code 10 Error and no more yellow exclamation marks. Cheers
Code10 Error WinXP No Sound
Hi One and All! Relax everyone. Problem solved. Lots of sound again. How did I do it? Not quite sure, but I disabled Gigabyte M/B AC97 in the BIOS, installed a $25 PCI Sound card and Voila! No more sleepless nights, for the time being at least. I'm not game at the moment to backtrack and re-enable AC97 to see if it works again. I'll save that for a rainy day. Thanks once again to all who expressed an interest.
Cheers
Cold, thank you.
