Print out 'pc world' CD contents list. (8 posts)

I would like to print a hard copy of the detailed contents list of the magazine CDs.
Is this possible?

Re: Print out 'pc world' CD contents list.

As you have the Contents sleeve that comes with CD showing a complete list, what do you want to do?

If you want to print the description that comes with each program you can copy and paste it. You can also access this description from the htm. files in the folders for the various groupings on the CD.

Hi!

What you need is a 'Directory Printer' there are a number of shareware programs around that will do the job for you. Do a Google.

Alternatively you could scan the menu from the magazine listing.

And finally, I believe that this question was posed quite recently in one of these forums-- Try looking in 'Other' perhaps it's there.
Hope this helps.

If you want your own printed copy print from the contents link on the autorun page. I doubt that the information showing from opening the CD and using a Print Directory program would be of much use to you. If you want such programs see Dec 2002 CD.

Hi!,
I forgot to add that directory printing programs are OK if the files have meaningful names. Of course, it is wasted if the files/folders don't really tell you what they are.

Thank you to Garry Bowles and Dick Tracey for replies. Am working at it.

Re: Print out 'pc world' CD contents list.

I originally got this solution from HelpScreen.

I have, until recently, copied the "contents.html" file from each PC WORLD CD/DVD into a Folder called PCWorld Index.

I then renamed the "contents.html" file to something like PCWDVDcontents 200707.html which tells me the year and the month of the disk where the file originally came from.

To find a particular piece of software like IrfanView etc I would do a WinExplorer search for this term in the PCWorld Index folder. The search results would point me in the right direction to find the particular CD/DVD. I could also click on the files found and it would bring up the index of the CD/DVD for that month which would also give me file version numbers etc.

I say "until recently" because PCWorld has recently (August 2007) redesigned the structure of their DVD's and I can now no longer do this. The "contents.html" appears to reference xml info and so simply copying and renaming the contents.html file as I have done for the last 6 1/2 years will no longer work.

I have now resorted to opening the contents.html file and cutting and pasting the text to a text file.

This is not an elegant solution but it works.

Does anyone have a nicer solution?

Re: Print out 'pc world' CD contents list.

Bill,

Do a search for a 'Directory Printer'- these will create (normally) text files of the heading of each folder and can quite often go right down to creating a list of the individual files.

www.programfiles.com is a good place to start.
