USB problem (Please insert a disk into Drive E:) (21 posts)

I recently bought a 4Gb USB stick and initially it seemed to work fine. However, one day when I plugged it into my laptop, when I tried to access it, it came up saying "Please insert a disk into Drive E:"

I unplugged it and plugged it in again, and it seemed to load correctly - all the correct messages came up in the baloon on the bottom right hand corner of the screen (i.e. it said "this device is ready to use" etc).

The light on the USB stick is on, and I can see it in my computer, but I can not access it as it gives me the same error message. I have tried to google this and I have played around with the drivers in device manager, but to no avail. I am using XP Pro (SP2) and usually have no problems with USB devices. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did you buy the stick on Ebay. If so it is a fake. It has been programmed to appear as a 4GB device, but is likely a 256 or 512. In any event it is corrupt. Try it in another PC. If the same issues arise bung it in the bin. You could try a partition and format. This might restore it to its original condition.

You may have a drive letter conflict. Use Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Disk Management to change the drive letters of your CD/DVD drives to M and N if they are currently not being used. This is a really neat feature of XP. I usually set my top drive to M and the next drive below it to N. I also change any built-in card reader slots to the next sequence of drive letters after my CD/DVD drives. This usually leaves the letters D-L open for USB drives or other drive letter devices.

Or, if you add another hard drive, it will take the next available letter which is usually the next letter after the last used on the first drive (just keep in mind that if the removable drive is used as an active drive - and it is not connected at the time, it may be important to make sure the drive letter for it is not superceded by the new drive.)
