I am being driven mad, one of my western digital ext hard drives (elements 320gb & 640gb) has fried it's power supply, so far I am having no luck at all sourcing a replacement either from wd or any one else. Can anyone help?

How old are the drives? Check warranty provisions, they used to be 3 yrs but I've heard a rumour some are now less. If they're within the time, take them back to your retailer for repair/replacement through WD system.

If the hard drive itself didn't fry the PS, try removing the drive from the case and installing it as a slave drive in your system. Over the years I've swapped so many in and out I can't keep track of them. HOWEVER, I've never had an external drive fry a power supply!

Hi Robert,

If the drive is still under warranty take it to your place of purchase.

If not, and past the warranty period - you might want to check out www.parts4pcs.com.au they may be able to source a replacement PSU for the box.

Hi Robert,

You could just buy a external case no HD and swap it over for around $40 - $50 the Welland case work well and look good. Good Luck John.

Fried power supply

Hi Robert

I have one of the Western Digital 500GB Elements hard drives and have also had the power supply go on me :O(

Like you I am having no joy in locating a local supplier of these power supplies. Did you ever track down a local replacement power supply ?

Fried 320G external Hard drive

Hi. I have also just had my Western Digital 320GB Elements hard drive spit the dummy. I took the thing apart and found a 5 cent diode had expolded sending a chain reaction onto some other irreplacable parts. Seems to be an increasing problem, as per usual these things happen just after the warranty expires. Does anyone know where you can get a replacement.

One person on this forum said they managed to get WD to send a free one (as it is obviously a faulty product).

the support line to call is 0011 800 6008 6008 (is in Singapore).

Never buy WD again. ext HD are supposed be reliable backups. What use is a backup if you can't access it due to a faulty PS... and PS's are next to impossible to replace.

WD elements

My Ext. WD Elements went down this morning and this is the time i really need it. All my data and study materials were in there. I thought its power point was loose but when i try different power points in my house the light on the brick adaptor just blink and all gone. Come to the retailer they said there will be 4 weeks to fix it and they were not so sure the data on the hard drive will be deleted or not. For those reasons, I decided to buy a 1 TB WD Elements (exactly the same model) to back up my data first by using the adaptor of the new one. I ask the guy 3 times is that same with my faulty one, and he said yes. when open the box, the new one using a jack for power while my older one using a round port (similar to S-Video port). Kind of upset after all. Seems like I have to sent the faulty one to WD with the risk of losing all the data. Any helps for my situation??? Please

The WD representative has the following info:

They can call our tech support on 1800 429 861 -- replacement adapters can be sent direct to the end user.

Alternatively they can contact the retailer the drive was purchased from and spare PSU's can be sourced through them at no additional cost -- allow up to a week for the spare part order to be filled at the store...
