Simple LAN between XP Pro and XP Home (7 posts)

Hi,

I have two computers, one running XP Home and the other running XP Pro. I am trying to network the two so as to share files and play multiplayer games but am having trouble establishing a LAN. I am using a cross-over cable to connect the NIC in each computer. I have tried the XP Network Setup Wizard but to no avail. I can see the Pro computer on the Home machine but can't browse it's files. I cannot see the Home machine and the Pro machine. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi Jomphi

Enable sharing of specific folders or drives on both (even the shared documents folder is not shared by default), set both to the same workgroup, set the login and password the same on both, set the ip address on one to 192.168.0.1, and the other to 192.168.0.2, reboot, should now be working.

Don't offer help if you do not know what you are talking about.

There is no way to network a XP home machine. No way, No how. Sorry to break it to you. Time to upgrade to pro.

Heres a good reference article if you don't believe me, but thats why it's called HOME:

Re: Simple LAN between XP Pro and XP Home

Hi Peter,

First of all check that the NIC leds on your PCs are on or not. If they are not you have problems in your cable.

If you have LEDs on then check if both the computers are on the same workgroup. Then force static IP address on both of them say, 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 and try pinging one address from the other.

If not reboot PC and check.

Best of luck

TWO COMPUTER LAN

I tried for 3 days to get a simple two computer system to work as a LAN using a cross over cable.

Both computers use XP.

Following the wizard directions, straight away I managed to get the client to connect to the internet via the Host, and I could get the host to connect to the Host places on the client.

The problem was the Client would not talk to the Host.

This problem was finally solved (after 3 days of trial after trial) when I installed the additions described below to the Local Area connection.

The final installation included : 1. Client for Microsoft Networks 2. File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks 3. QoS Packet scheduler 4. NWLink NetBIOS 5. NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Transport Protocol 6. Network Monitor Driver 7. Microsoft TCP/IP version 6 8. Internet Protocol (TCP.IP)

I made these additions to both the client and the host LAN connection.

START—CONTROL PANEL – NETWORK CONNECTIONS Highlight the LAN Then use the pulldown menu ADVANCED – ADVANCED SETTINGS and THEN ADD ALL THE BINDINGS IN THE LIST

After I made these additions on both computers a miracle took place.

EVERYTHING WORKED!!

Dear Austin B,

You were mistaken.

I have been able to network XP Home and XP Pro.

Cheers,

Jomphi

Hi Jomphi

Do not be deterred by the likes of Austin B. There are many out there who do indeed not know what they are talking about. Networking Home is a straightforward as Pro.
