Networing Email Problem (6 posts)

I have a problem with setting up email accounts on a home network.

I have been running a cable modem (Optus) with a 4 port router connected for over 5 years now, but am changing servers to iinet's ADSL in the next few days.

At this stage the email accounts are up and running on iinet, just waiting for the ADSL2 to be connected.

Over the time with Optus I have had four machines running, all with different email accounts, and never any problems.

Because of a delay in the ADSL being connected I have setup usernames and opened the accounts on iinet, and here is the problem: the machine that has the account holders name on it works fine, can send and receive on iinet, but the other accounts on the other machine which are names added as extra accounts, can receive email but can not send it.

iinet are not much help as "WE DON'T SUPPORT NETWORKING" but they are willing to sell you a 4 port modem/router. Work that one out.

All the settings are the same on all machines (except the username) as the main one, and nothing has been changed setting wise in the router or networking set up. All that has been done is to add an account in TOOLS, ACCOUNTS in Outlook Express.

Optus accounts are still active also.

Any ideas on why they can receive email but not send it ?

Re: Networing Email Problem

It is unlikely that you are sending any email via iinet as to do so, Optus would have to support mail forwarding which is possible, but also unlikely. I suspect that on the one (main) PC the default email is Optus, so any outgoing is automatically sent via Optus. Once iinet is connected you won't have sending issues. Make sure that the iinet accounts are set to default at that point otherwise the same problem will occur in reverse.

Or I could be quite wrong!

OK. If you set up one of the sub accounts on the main machine can it send and receive? Also check that the main machine's IP address is set as the default gateway in the others.

Re: Networing Email Problem

Hi,

So are you still using Optus?

If so, you will need to use Optus' SMTP servers to send mail, NOT iinet.

Change your SMTP server settings to mail.optusnet.com.au

Once you get iinet hooked up, change your SMTP server settings again to iinet's.

This really should be something that either Optus or iinet should be able to help you with, but unfortunately, the people they have in technical support prefer to hide and take refuge under the "we don't support networks" rubbish, which is fair enough, but this isn't a networking issue!

Re: Networing Email Problem

Hi,

I just thought of one other thing that could be the problem... you haven't by any chance, installed Netgear's VPN client recently, have you? If so, that will also cause your mail to stop working on the networked PC's.

Daniel

Re: Networing Email Problem

FYI Chris B and others.

Optus DOES support mail forwarding and remote mail connection. You just have to argue with the (alledged) support people and eventually someone will admit that you can do pass-through mail with other service providers.

I currently POP-collect and SMTP-send mail from Yahoo and Google without problems, although Yahoo is a bit problematic on the SMTP side.

Optus told me, "You can remove the block on port 25 by following the instructions at https://myaccount.optusnet.com.au/removemailfilter/. "

The codicil is that Optus sometimes re-impose the filter without telling you so you may have to go around again (I haven't so far - touch wood).

Best wishes, Yraen
