My computer is about five years old and I only have a dial-up internet connection. The only virus scanner I have is AVG. Whenever AVG wanted to download updates, I would in most cases cancel the updates as on dial-up it would take a long time to download and I’d want to browse the internet instead and couldn’t be bothered waiting. Now my computer is running very slowly, sometimes crashes and no doubt has viruses. What shall I do?
1. Buy a good virus scanner, install it and hope that it can rid my computer of the viruses and trojans?
2. Back up all my important data onto CDs and format my hard drive?

AVG is good. Visit someone with broadband and download the latest installer. Even without further updates it should clean up anything in the virus line currently on your machine. While you are at it, download Spybot S&D and install that for spyware/trojan protection. Before installing, turn off system restore and ensure all restore points are deleted. This is where most nasties will hide so they are protected from cleaning. After all is clean, turn it back on if you use it. Your important data should already be on CD. Never rely on a hard drive. Even without virus infection they can die without notice. A periodic format and reinstall is like getting a new machine. Much fun.

I use trend Internet Security and for about $99 sometimes less on specials, it deletes viruses, Spam, Spyware and more. It entitles you for a year of updates too. That $99 will protect three computers, so get two other friends and sell them a copy at $33 and that way you only spend $33. (Thats only 9c a day to keep your computer clean)
As for updates, I agree with chris and take it to a friend with broadband. If you can't wait for the updates, how are you going to protect your computer? Just click the updates button and go and have dinner or make a cup of tea. My mother in law said that her computer was protected as she had AVG, but had not done an update for 6 months. Thats why she had 8 viruses on her computer when I checked it. Even if it takes a while, you must do the updates to keep it protected!

I also use AVG and have done for years. It takes only a minute or two to update (I'm also on dial-up) and it can easily do so in the background while I continue using the Internet. If it takes a long time to update on your machine and you can't do anything else at the same time then I think you have a problem somewhere! It has always saved me from viruses too and I find it most reliable.
You could log-on to Trend Micro and allow it to do a scan of your machine. I don't use it myself but some people say it is good. Otherwise download the latest AVG and update it and try it again. I have found it surprising just how many CD's are needed to backup important data and I have never wanted to reformat my hard drive. I would try all methods to de-virus the machine first before doing that! Good luck.
