Malwarewipe (10 posts)

My son has managed to install a program called malwarewipe 4.1. I cannot uninstall it. I also now have alert popups from the taskbar, my IE toolbar loads to "about:blank" that directs me to an anti-virus website, and adult or casino advertisements are now appearing randomly from IE.

I have tried Adaware, spybot and Trend PC-cillan without success.

Any ideas on how to get rid of this pest please.

Re: Malwarewipe

You could try HijackThis, but is it all worth the effort? Save data, format and clean install. This time Ghost it after activation and initial program installation, so when he does it again, you can rebuild in minutes.

Re: Malwarewipe

Have you tried MS Defender which is available from MS as a free download?

If you Google, you'll also find numerous hits that may assist with its removal.

Re: Malwarewipe

Firstly make sure you are using the most recent definitions for both the programs you mentioned (check for updates...). Then try Ewido from www.ewido.com, and if you have a legitimate copy of Windows then download the Microsoft Windows Defender (link on their home page). If you still have problems you will need a utility like HijackThis, however you may need help deciding which startup programs are legitimate and which arent. If in doubt then locate the file listed in HijackThis and rename it rather than disabling it (You can name it back if you made a mistake).

Re: Malwarewipe

Unfortunately a lot of programs that are supposedly anti-spyware are in fact spyware, which just gives everything a bad reputation. If you search Google for a removal tool, I'd suggest you only trust well known services, such as McAfee, Trend Micro, etc. About:blank is a really difficult pest to get rid of. Good luck.

Re: Malwarewipe

I would try this, go here and download "Move On Boot" it downloads fast and will get rid of items that will not delete or remove. >>

Now and this is very important after you remove this program that you want to remove, turn OFF system restore, then run your antivirus, then restart your computer and then turn on "System Restore" again.

You will lose past system restores this way but if you don t do it, the progam you want to get rid of could be restored automatically by your system restore! Let us know if this did it?

Re: Malwarewipe

Thanks for the advice.

I have tried various solutions but a clean reinstall is looking good at the moment.

Re: Malwarewipe

Reinstalling.

If you have a bootable CD or can put the hard drive into another PC you can make this a simple process. Simply rename C:windows to old windows, C:programs and docs to old progs and docs, and C:program files to old progs then reinstall.

Ignore the repair option and do a clean reinstall (use same CD as originally used) and leave the hard-drive as is without formatting. When you are complete you can retrieve the data from the old... folders.

Hi - I am certainly delighted to discover this. great job!
