ICS & tp-link tl-wr642g (3 posts)

I am trying to set up a wireless network at home with a tp-link router model tl-wr642g and two computers both running windows xp home sp2. I can get the network operating OK so both computers can see each other, share files etc. but I am having problems trying to establish Internet Connection Sharing.

Owing to my rural location I do not have broadband internet access but currently have ISDN access which cannot connect directly to the router. The problem seems to be with the addresses as windows XP seems to only be able to assign one static address to the computer with internet access, this being 192.168.0.1 and the tp-link router will not accept this as within a valid address range for dhcp assignment and the other computer can then not see the computer with this address and so cannot access the internet or this computer when this address is used as static ip address. If I use a static address within the routers range, eg 192.168.1.101, the other computer can share files etc but ICS doesn't work. I think I have tried all options and may need to buy a different wireless access point device but I would welcome any advice that might help to overcome this problem before I do that.

Internet connection sharing requires your gateway machine to be the DHCP server so this function must be turned off on your router. See page 30 in your manual for the DHCP settings.

ICS uses 192.168.0.1. The end. Why can't it connect to the router? USB only perhaps? If it is cat5, it can connect to the router. More info needed. Make and model of the ISDN modem please.
