MID files no sound (1 post)

Since my new phone uses MID files for ringtones, I've just discovered the web is full of them for free download. Not sure exactly what they are but it appears its code the computer translates into notes played on an instument (similar to synthesizer).

Anyway I found a heap of free Xmas carols and set them up as a playlist for the office Xmas party. I was playing them at home and my main computer wont play them properly. They play ok on my old win 98 laptop (windows media player 9) and at work (fortunately) but when I play them on my windows xp pro sp2 machine in windows media player 11, cyberlink power dvd 6 or several other players, they appear to play ok, but no sound comes out.

Without altering any settings, if I open an MP3,wma or Wav file sound comes out. I have checked during mid playback and nothing is muted, and I ran the creative file checker and all the soundcards drivers including the mid driver are ok.

Any ideas why I get no sound with MID? The output is from the analogue out to a hifi amplifier and a pair of POLK bookshelf speakers. I might try headphones or (shudder) computer speakers but as the output is analogue I didn't think the type of speakers would matter.
