WinMe accessing WinXP's internet (10 posts)

I have recently upgraded from dial-up to Virgin Home Broadband, and its minimum requirement is WinXp (SP2). I CAN receive that wirelessly in WinXP(SP3) - is there a chance that I would be able to keep doing my email in WinMe by networking the WinMe system with the WinXP ? Virgin can not tell me if it would work, and if it did, would not 'support it'

Absolutely...

I assume "I CAN receive that wirelessly in WinXP(SP3)" means you have a wireless broadband router modem that connects to Virgin and your XP machine has a wireless network connection to the access point...

Try connecting wirelessly to the same access point with the ME machine. If that doesn't work use Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) on the XP machine.

IE XP connects to the access point and share the internet with other machines over a LAN

I may be wrong but I don't think you can network two different operating systems together?

Tom G "I may be wrong but..." what am I doing wrong then? I have Vista, XP and 2000 all working together happily shared folders etc...

Your assumptions are correct.

I HAVE run WinMe in the same PC that connects both wirelessly and by Ethernet cable when WinXP is the O/S. A totally negative result for WinMe.

Your suggestion is what I was asking about - whether that is likely to succeed, before I spend the considerable effort involved in setting a network up.

I know for a fact that you CAN, because I have done it. The gist of my question is - can I make virgin broadband accessible to WinMe by networking WinMe with WinXP which I KNOW can (and does) accesses Virgin Broadband.

Why do you think you are doing something wrong ?

A fundamental difference between WinME and the likes of 2K, Xp and Vista is that the latter three are based on NT; WinMe is NOT.

Yes.

Install Internet Connection Sharing on the XP machine that is connecting to the modem.

Connect the ME machine directly to the XP with a crossover cable OR with straight through cable via a hub.

WinME, being the embarrassment to Microsoft that it is, can be "finiky" when it comes to networking.

I am surprised you cannot get a result when you connect the winME PC by CAT5 cable to the router/modem. What is the make model of said modem? Is the Ethernet device on the winME PC working?

I have since realised that at very least the Device Manager must show the presence of a viable Network Adapter. That was NOT the case when I posted the question - however, it is now, which I think answers the question "Is the Ethernet device on the WinME PC working?"

I still don't get a connection icon showing in the systray, even though it used to for dial-up. I have not found in Control Panel's Networks, an option for displaying it.

The modem is GlobeSurfer II 7.2 - QualCom 3G CDMA

I haven't used WinME for a long time, but I seem to recall it gave seperate icons for Ethernet connections and dial-up connections (which were often icons that actually appeared because of the ISP programs).
