Can't access XP machine through 98 machine (6 posts)

Hello,

I have this problem, I cant get access to my xp computer from my 98 machine.

I go to network neighborhood and I can see that both of my computers are there. Then when I want to access the xp computer, a dialog box comes up saying" that the computer is not accessiable & the device does not exist on the network".

But I can got to my Xp computer and I can access my win 98 computer with no problems.

Any help with this problem would be most helpfull

Thanks

Win98 can not read NTFS partitions. If the drive is formatted as NTFS you can make files available by dropping them into the Shared Documents folder.

Re: Can't access XP machine through 98 machine

Hi Evan,

If you installed XP with the NTFS file system then 98 won't be able to read it as it's using the FAT file system. XP however can read both. That's why you can access the 98 machine from XP but not vice-versa.

An alternative is to get rid of XP and reinstall it but this time select the FAT installation.

Sorry boys but 98 CAN see NTFS through the network.
