Can I trust Registry Booster? (26 posts)

After following a link I ended up downloading/running "Registry Booster" which claims it can fix all sorts of computer problems.

It reported 485 problems with the registry, but the PC runs OK. It'll fix 15 errors free, but I have to purchase the SW to fix the lot.

Can I trust this tool? Is it the best one to use?

Can I trust this tool? NO. Is it the best one to use? NO.

Crapware. Dangerous. Delete it. No registry 'fixer' should ever be run unless the system is near death and you are prepared to format and reinstall.

That said, there are a few good ones, but I won't go into it because in the hands of a non professional, such things ALWAYS lead to grief.

Re: Can I trust Registry Booster?

Don't bother - uninstall the program and move along. Most registry "fixes" don't do much at all. The fact your computer is running ok would mean don't bother. I'm sure there are links in the registry that have information regarding programs removed long ago but they have little affect on your PC's overall performance. RAM and processor speed do! If you did buy the program and "fix" your broken registry I doubt you'll see much improvment in your computers performance.

Re: Can I trust Registry Booster?

I've been using it for some time now without any apparent problems. Like most software, we assume that the code writer knows what he/she is doing and isn't going to cause problems for us. I do always create my own System Restore before running it and I always make a Ghost image before installing new software (like this) for the first time.

And yes, you have to pay to get the full Repair job.

Re: Can I trust Registry Booster?

Don't know about Registry Booster but I've been using Registry Mechanic for a long time for similar registry fixes. It cleans up dead shortcuts, links and other junk left behind after deletions, uninstalls, etc. I guess Registry Booster must be something similar?

Re: Can I trust Registry Booster?

I Think no. There is many ather tools. try CCleaner: http://ccleaner.com

Re: Can I trust Registry Booster?

Try using the registry fixer that comes with the free ccleaner drive cleaner program you can obtain from MajorGeeks.Com. Also, while you are there, download Easy Cleaneer 2 but only run the Registry Cleaner and delete all that are found. If you still have a lot detected by Booster, I would offer tha alternative - back up all your data files and do a clean install of the operating system. It's not a bad idea to do once a year as you get a really clean registry only this way.

Re: Can I trust Registry Booster?

Use ccleaner www.ccleaner.com It's freeware & does a good job.

Re: Can I trust Registry Booster?

Don't trust any registry cleaning tools except Microsoft's Regclean. Even those that actually do fix things rarely make any noticeable difference. If it ain't broke then don't fix it. Best way to "clean the registry" is to conduct a fesh install of Windows and install only the software you are actually using.

Re: Can I trust Registry Booster?

If it was a link saying "You could have major problems on your computer, click here so we can fix it for you" I would treat it with the utmost suspicion. Especially if it was jiggling up and down in your browser, flashing red at you.

Something like PCTools Registry Mechanic 6 which was on the "January 2008" disk on the last PCWorld magazine to be published in Australia would be a safer bet.

If you can't find the DVD, try http://www.pctools.com/ you might be able to score a free download, but I can't promise anything : I use Linux!
