Error: CPU was previously shutdown due to a thermal event (5 posts)

Hi,

I have a custom built computer with a 2.4ghz P4 (or maybe celeron?) and an Intel d865glc MB, and I am constantly receiving the folowing message on boot along with four beeps:

"The CPU was previously shutdown due to a thermal event(overheating).

service the unit right away to resolve this."

I took the PC in to get repaired where new thermal grease was put on the CPU/Heatsink, that solved the problem for a couple of weeks but now it has started again, can anyone help me work out what the REAL problem is?

I have also heard that this problem occurs in Dells with a different MB when their Capacitors leak; I have checked all my capacitors and they are ok. I have also cleaned my computer recently so I don't think that is a problem. Could it be the PSU not supplying enough power, as I just installed a new PCI card? Could it be a damaged Sensor on the CPU?

Thanks Chris

Everything you mentioned is a possibility. Caps don't have to look bad to be bad. Is the CPU heatsink clean and is the fan spinning freely? A new heatsink/fan combo would probably be the next step. Most come with a thermal pad so paste/grease is not required. There should be a page in the BIOS where you can see temps and fan speeds. If the CPU temp sensor is faulty it should show here, and if the fan speed sensor is faulty you will see 0 revs.

I did a bit of digging, and while it was clear what was causing the problem with certain Dell motherboards, the substandard capacitors, its clear that some owners of your type of Intel motherboard are also having problems but its unclear why.

The fact that it went away for a while after the CPU heatsink was refitted showed its not capacitors.

You might wonder if the heatsink wasn't refitted properly, but unfortunately it is the nature of the compounds used to transfer heat from the CPU to the heatsink that if they are repeatedly overheated they dry out and work less and less effectively, and the problem comes back.

That leaves several possibilities.

1. that there is a fault that Intel hasn't identified or is choosing not to acknowledge.

2. that processor is marginal in terms of the amount of heat it generates versus how much it can dissipate, and it only works without overheating in ideal circumstances, and your PC does not provide those ideal circumstances.

If it was me I'd start by fitting a case fan to suck the hot air out. And if that still didn't work I'd look for a better heatsink with a bigger fan. And if it was an old PC I'd suggest that's what you do. But its a new PC, presumably with a warranty, so that's the supplier's responsibility. You shouldn't have to try to fix the problem. If you try you may void the warranty. I realise this is an unpleasant thing to have to do, but you've got to make clear to the supplier that they have to fix the overheating problem, or provide you with a PC that doesn't have an overheating problem, or give you your money back.

Re: Error: CPU was previously shutdown due to a thermal event

Sorry for coming back to such an old question but i put the computer away and haven't attempted to fix it until now, i installed a new zalman heatsink and fan which didn't work so i replaced the motherboard with a spare one i had lying around this still didn't work so i have installed a new psu as well, now the computer boots every time but still displays "The CPU was previously shutdown due to a thermal event(overheating). service the unit right away to resolve this." I have checked in the bios and realised the cpu temp is 94 - 98 degrees celsius, could the problem be with the thermometer on the cpu? if so can i fix this or just replace the cpu for about $40-$60? By the way this computer doesn't have a warranty. Thank you very much, chris

CPU was previously shutdown due to a thermal event

i have the above problem and also the cd driver is not booting when the HDD is connected if we removed the HDD it is Booting via CD, Please give me solution as soon as possible.
