Connecting 2 wireless routers (7 posts)

I have a windows 2000 sp4 computer.

I want to hook into my home network to wirelessly connect to a dlink adsl modem router. I could buy a wirless PCI card, but as I have a spare wireless modem router I wonder if I could connect this to the windows 2000 computer via ethernet then link it wirelessly to the other router with the broadband connection on it?

If so I presume I would need to configure it to get its DNS address off the main router and turn off its adsl function.

The main router has wireless configured with a shared key and my laptop (win98) connects to it ok wirelessly. There is P4 win XP sp2 PC connected to the main router via ethernet, as well as VOIP modem, leaving 2 spare ethernet sockets.

Re: Connecting 2 wireless routers

First thoughts? Probably not. A card will cost you 50 bucks, and I think is the way to go. Provide the make and model of the spare unit so I / we can have a look at the configuration options. You never know. A little note here - When posting a question please provide every bit of information possible. Just coz you think it doesn't matter, doesn't make it so....

The wireless adsl broadband router connected to the internet is a D Link DSL G604T, the spare one is Linksys WAG54GP2.

I didn't enter details as I just wanted the general principle, which sounds from your reply to be a non starter. I will get a wireless PCI card.

Re: Connecting 2 wireless routers

Sometimes you can use one for this purpose, but it is model specific, so there isn't a general principle which can be applied to all. In this case after a look through the configuration guide, it appears not.

Yes I would like to do a similar thing...

I want to connect two wireless routers via Ethernet to extend the range. The master with the DSL connection is a Zyxcel Prestige 2602HWL-61C and the secondary 'relay' is a Billion BIPAC-743GE. Basically I need to bridge the Billion's wireless features with its LAN.

Re: Connecting 2 wireless routers

Chris: I have have the manuals of both the routers. What should I be looking for?

Re: Connecting 2 wireless routers

Hi Joel.

First thing is you should always start your own thread. By tacking on to an older question to which only I responded, only I and Philip see your question. This drastically limits the number of people who might be able to come up with an answer, for example someone who might own the equipment you have specified and therefore might have an answer at the ready. Unfortunately, I do not.

I have studied your manuals and neither specify such a function. That said, it might just work. To avoid overlap interference, set the wireless channels as far apart as possible - say ch 6 and ch 11. Disable / turn everything off except the wireless in the unit which will be the "slave", connect them both via a cat5 plugged into LAN ports on both (not WAN), and see what happens. If no success, try a crossover cable or one end into the WAN port, but I don't think this will be necessary. I really don't know if it will be possible, but interested to hear the outcome.

p.s. To refer back to Philips original question, these units don't offer dual mode either (AP / Station). I have a ZyXEL unit which does - USB G-220 (From the box - Working as a Wireless USB Client or an Access Point at Your Choice). I can use this as a wireless card, click once and change it to Access Point mode, whereby it will allow other pc's to connect and share the available resources - internet shared via network card or modem, file sharing etc., so it can be done!
