AOE Crashes computer after exit (2 posts)

I am running 98 SE on a PIII 733 with a TNT2 Model 64 Pro.

When I open Age of Empires 2 Conquerors expansion the following appears during the opening "MCI Error - MM System 296 - The file cannot be played on the specified MCI device. The file may be corrupt format". The game then plays OK but the computer crashes after I exit, resulting in BSOD.

What do I need to do to fix this?

Thanks in advance for any advice

Re: AOE Crashes computer after exit

Hi Paul your video cars and sound card drivers are not set correctly.

Here is a link that explains what the error is and how to fix it.

When you start The Magic School Bus Explores The Human Body, or run Sound Test in the Bus Stop utility

Cause - This error message occurs if the Windows MCI Sound driver is not installed

Solution - Microsoft KB article Q127858. (125)

Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. Click Multimedia. Click the Advanced (Devices in Windows 98) tab. Double-click Media Control Devices. Make sure that Wave Audio Device (Media Control) is listed on this branch. If it is not, follow the instructions in the section below called Installing Wave Audio Device under Windows 95/98, and then, restart with step 1, above. Click Wave Audio Device (Media Control), and then click Properties. Click the Use This Media Control Device check box to select it, and then click OK Installing Wave Audio Device under Windows 95/98 Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. Double-click Add New Hardware, and then click Next. When you are prompted "Do you want Windows to search for your new hardware?" click No, and then click Next. In the list of Hardware types, click Sound, Video And Game Controllers, and then click Next. In the Manufacturer section, click Microsoft MCI, then click Wave Audio Device (Media Control). Click Next, and then click Finish. Restart Windows.

2) With QuickTime Movie - You receive "Unable to play file. MCI Error: MMSystem263. This is not a registered MCI device." message

The problem can be caused by the compatibility between Windows Media Player and QuickTime for Windows. Video Editor uses Windows Media Player to Playback video file. But 16 bit QuickTime for Windows is not supported by Media Player. We suggest you to upgrade to MediaStudio Pro 5.2 , which support 32 bit QuickTime for Windows and playback video file by Active Movie.

3) While starting a video and get the error "MCI Error: Error occurred during command 'open D:\video\100view.mpg alias MyAVI parent 3708 style child'" "MMSYSTEM263. This is not a registered MCI device" - Find and Download ActiveMovie.
