Contemplating buying one.
Interested in comments re this printer from anybody that has it or has used it and has come across any problems or deficiencies.
Particularly interested in it's CD/DVD printing performance and if somebody has experienced problems with this task.
Any comments on ink usage / photo quality / and ease of use.
Any comments would be greatfully appreciated
Many thanks

Re: Comment on Canon PIXMA MP 780 printer
Lucky,
Firstly - If you want to print on A5 paper Canon don't make it and you'll have to set a custom size every time. This is a known problem with Canon. If they do not market a particular paper size- then you can't set your printer - Like making a banner over A4 long for an A4 printer. Forget it. I had a friend who has a Canon - model unknown but he WAS concerned over ink usage. I have no idea myself being an Epson man since the year dot.
I believe that the newer Epson printers will also print to CD. But you have to ask yourself, What will be my MAIN PRINT function? Of course if it's CD's??
IMO EPSON gives the best print quality and there are so many more options. (paper 210mm wide by 8Metres long, 100 mm wide by 8Metres long) I have printed pictures up to 1.2M long (panoramic from the web) and they come up great.
My 2c worth.

I must agree with Dick. Have a serious look at the Epson R210.

Re: Comment on Canon PIXMA MP 780 printer
I intended buying a new multi-function printer / scanner / fax etc.
After looking around at what was available, I decided it would either be a Canon MP780 or a Brother MFC-6220CN. The Canon had CD printing but it was expensive. The Brother had networking included and was cheaper. I would have liked both features, but to add networking to the Canon would have put its price up even further. Since it was going to be left turned on all the time to answer the phone and receive faxes I eventually went for the Brother because information on the companies web sites said it only used 7W in its power save mode, where as the Canon used 27W. Twenty extra watts 24 hours a day 365 days a year with Adelaide's power prices adds up to a lot of money that over the life of the device would have made the Canon more expensive still.
If I was making the decision again, knowing what I know now, I'd probably buy the Canon because the Brother is very slow to come out of its power save mode - so if you want to print or fax you have to go to the printer, press a button, then find something else to do for 5 minutes before you tell the PC to start - and Brother's utilities for use across a network are rudimentary, crude and limited in features.

Canon makes superb products.
I have a i865 and a Pixma iP5000, both of which have the CD/DVD printing facility and it's excellent. Shop online for the best price though as there are some bargains to be had.
Canon's print heads are not part of the cartridges so can be easily replaced if need be. Replacement ink cartridges from CALIDAD are excellent substitutes for Canon genuine at approximately half the price. Do a Google for "PIXMA MP780 REVIEWS" and read up.

I agree with Dick & Chris B, but in my opinion go for the Epson R310, it is a few bucks more as it has the cardreaders built in.
I have them and they are a great printer. Ink wise quite good also. Shop for cartridges because Epson are a bit on the expensive side at close to $19.00 EACH colour, and there are 6 colours. You can get a set of 6 for about $28.00 by looking in the right places or try refilling them.

Alan,
I did not say that Canon made bad products. In fact they DO make excellent equipment.
What I put in my comments was my personal opinion and information gained from a friend who has a Canon, nothing more.
About using other than genuine inks, a great way to screw your warranty, I actually buy my Epson cartridges on Ebay @ about 50% of the Australian price.
One comment that I have against Canon. From a friend, if Canon do not market a particular print media, the settings will not be available on your printer, like A5 for instance (except custom settings). See a post on this pparticular subject on one of these forums.

Re: Comment on Canon PIXMA MP 780 printer
Dick,
Nowhere did I say that Canon isn't a good product. In fact I have an A3 BJC4650 myself that is about 5 years old and still works like new. What I said was that I agree with both Chris B and yourself that the Epson offers more selection as to setting paper lengths etc, and in my opinion is the better choice also.
Also, as to refilling you own cartridges. Refilling them does not void your warranty as the makers would have you believe. If using a product OTHER than the genuine, then using an after market pre filled cartridge Calidad etc (as was suggested by someone) would also void it would it not? Imagine being tied to using makers cartridges at close to $19.00 each plus postage as shown on Epson's web site, ($114.00 per set) for a one year period. I also purchase my cartridges on Ebay and also refill as well, and over the years have never had a problem.
Here is what Hewlett-Packard has posted on their web site as an example of my argument:
Using refilled print cartridges alone does not affect either the warranty or any maintenance contract purchased from HP for its HP Inkjet printers.
I guess the same would have to apply for all other makers as well.

The comments on using after-market & refilling cartridges are valid however just because one manufacturer does not worry about this, does not specifically carry through to other manufacturers. So just be warned.
Over and out.

Re: Comment on Canon PIXMA MP 780 printer
This question seems to have degenerated into a comment about ink refills and other brand cartridges. I believe the legals (Trade Practices Act) regarding other brand cartridges and ink refills is that the manufacturers cannot force you to buy genuine inks for their printers.
However, they do not repair their machines under warranty if damaged by not their brand inks. The cost would be charged to you, the owner of the printer and then you would probably succeed with a claim against the supplier (the retailer) of the other brand inks especially if the manufacturer put it in writing that the other brand inks caused the damage. Epson has been running an advertising campaign about non Epson inks and the potential to damage their printers. Maybe other brand inks do damage their printers. Buyer beware or is that Caveat Emptor.
