Problems after Vista SP2 install (149 posts)

I've had no end of problems with my HP laptop after downloading Vista SP2 software.(I normally run Vista Home Premium) I now have multiple problems starting up with blue screen of death, Windows trying to start in "Safe Mode" and "Windows Auto Rescue" trying unsuccessfully to fix whatever is going wrong. I have Nortons 360 Antivirus and Firewall and do weekly scans. I suspect that I may have a corrupted Registry but have no idea what to do about it. A local repairer has suggested Malware but I am not convinced since I have Nortons 360 operating. Does a Service Pack usually cause this sort of problem? Cheers, Rod

System restore

If you have System Restore enabled on your PC, restore your system to a date before you installed SP2. Seems like SP2 and one of your programs is not getting along.

If you can't do a system restore, try disabling Norton 360 and see if that fixes the problem. If it does, then get the latest possible update for Norton 360 before you enable it again.

Hope this helps.

Vista SP2

I hope MS will take some notice and FIX this service pack ... I too, have had a blue-screen start-up problem after the install of SP2, on my Gateway NX570XL laptop, running VHP. I will bet there are numerous others that have had or will have the same problem. I have nothing special on the PC, nothing was done after the install ... no new programs or changes to the PC. The Gateway restore of the system (with it's Fix Problem software) removed the SP2 installation and the system started with no problem. Notice that this problem occurred 2 days after the install. Interesting ...

Vista SP2

Had same problem on my Gateway Desktop. Finally was able to get Windows to start and immediately did a system restore. PC is running top notch now. I also had no trouble with SP2 until 2 days later. Interesting indead.

vista sp2

After trying all of the above start in safe mode(f8) go to start/control panel/programs and features-- look for sp2 and un-install it.

I seem to be lucky so far installed this morning- no problems yet!

good luch to you.

I am on the phone right now with Microsoft. I have a HP desktop and was having problems installing net frame. They got it put in and the tech guy told me that I would most likely have problems with Vista P2. They are now installing it for me. They had to remove Norton. (I have the disc - so I can put it back in.) I asked if they could show me what to do -- and the tech stated frankly it will be easier to call. I think they might have an entire department on stand by. 866 234 6020 -- they seem to be able to get it running --

I can do much better than blue screen

A blue screen - you must be mistaken because I remember reading that after XP those just can't happen any more. I remembered that the last time I was looking at a blue screen in Vista :-) But I can better you. After installing Service Pack 2, the PC rebooted and gave me a corrupted display with vertical bars and also squares rapidly changing colour - so much prettier and much more 'up-market' than your plain blue. Subsequent reboots after forced power down makes no difference. I set a restore point before letting the service pack install, but I can't get in to be able to roll back to that point because I have no usable display, just the pretty bars. I can't even see anything to be able to use the diagnostic or restore disks.

I took this desktop back to factory settings a few weeks ago after another Vista upgrade killed my network - well twice because I let it update itself and it installed the same upgrade again and killed it again so I had to start all over. I have done three 'back to factory' on my laptop over a period of about 18 months after Vista update problems that slowed it to an unusable crawl. This message is written from an Apple Macbook Air which I bought a few months ago to replace the laptop, and I have just come off the Apple site this morning where I have ordered an iMac desktop. I'll try and fix the PC desktop display problem, but I've finally had enough of Microsoft and even if I get the PC working, it seems just a matter of time before the next problem. Apple really does work out of the box and I am fast becoming a real fan. A bit more expensive, but I run a small business and 4 days lost on rebuilding PCs from factory settings sort of sets that extra cost in context.

I wish you every success in solving your problems. Nick

i have the same problem

I have an HP iq771 touchsmart running vista home premium, after installing sp2 everytime i wanted to switch off the pc I got a bluescreen usb bugcode?. If I ininstalled sp2 then all was ok again. After doing some reserch I was guided towards using hotfix kb962201 from MS this also had the same effect. Can anyone help??????

I have also experince problems as result of service pack 2

I too have the problem with service pack 2 with Vistas. what it does is display the welcome window screen, allows you to login and then goes black. you are able to do the ctrl Alt delete trick as get that 5 item menu which is used to do a control shut down. I notice it was really hard now to get into having the system notice with escape key as to get into safe mode .. it took more than 10 ties and wait for it so I can do the control shut down before attemping it again. Also I experince notice some of the times it went to boot from option of either hard drive or CDROM. When this happen it flashed the screen for the escape/F8 before pop up the boot up option screen.

I have been all along of allow the computer to get it's windows updates before it wanted to install this Vista service pack 2.

lease note that it had just install 2 vista updates before it decide to update date it self with service pack 2.

I have also tried restoring the system before installing service pack 2 and it does not compete the restore because it errors out as result of reporting that file already exsit.

It does not report which file that is the problem .. so I can delete it.

I have tried re-stalling the service pack2 and as the same as before.

So the computer is hosed at this time.

SP2 killed my Acer laptop

After completing the stage 2 and the reboot my Acer laptop with Vista Ultimate stopped working. It would show the "exception at..." and the file name and number. The restore didn't work either as it just couldn't get further that exception point.

I had therefore to restore the system to the factory settings which took me quite a bit of time. This is one of those unhappy moments that makes you wish for an alternative mainstream OS. Hey Google, your turn!
