Can I combine 10baseT and 10base2 networks? (4 posts)

Is it possible to network three computers, using RJ45 between computers one and two, and BNC/coax between computers two and three.

This is possible but you would need two network cards in computer two. This is because while many ethernet cards have two ports, they will only use one at a time. You are probably best off purchasing a small hub. Many hubs have a single BNC connector to allow you to connect your BNC network to your RJ45. Be sure to check this first before you buy a hub though!

Yes/no and maybe

It all depends on what you want to do. If you have both a 10baseT and a separate Ethernet network card in computer 2, configured correctly, and run IPX there is no technical reason why it should not work. (TCP might work also, but configuration gets tricky). However, Computer 1 will probably not be able to see computer 3.

Network cards are cheap, I suggest you just get the extra 10baseT card, and a $50 hub. (You could possibly get a hub with 10baseT and ethernet sockets to work, but if you are buying a hub, spend the extra $25 on another 10baseT card).

You could build a network like this with network cards in computers one and two linked via a crossover cable between network cards and a SECOND network card in computer two linked to computer three. In effect you would have two networks with computer two acting as a bridge between the networks. The load on computer two passing messages between computers one and three could be quite substantial.
