defrag (6 posts)

When I run "defrag", it only gets to 10% and then advises that "drive has changed, restarting....." the defrag process never gets beyond 10%.

Re: defrag

I have the same trouble and also with "scan disk" unless I turn off all other running programs such as; virus scanners, screen savers, firewalls, etc.

This usually solves the problem for me.

Good Luck, Robert.

Re: defrag

Are you defragging in normal windows mode? If you are, first press ctrl-alt-del to see the amount of applications running in your background and close them all down, even the anti-virus software. Then try defragging it then, leave everything as it is. If all else fails, then boot up your computer in safe mode during start up. You can do this if you have Win95, by pressing I think F8, or if you are using Win98 press either ctrl or F8. Ctrl is better... Once in safe mode, defrag there as there would be less conflicts.

Hope this solves your problem

Re: defrag

Turn off screensaver, virus checker or anything else that may try to acces the hard drive during the defrag process...........

Re: defrag

Best Defrag Program (Third Party) - Norton's Speed Disk Worst Defrag Program (Third Party) - Fix-It - Utilities Power Disk

Best way to defrag under Windows - CtrlAltDel, end all programs except Explorer and Systray.

Re: defrag

This is an easy problem to solve.

Just turn off all background programs. You can do this by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Del to see what you have running.

iexplore and systray are the only programs that should be running.
