Hi, I'm not sure when or how this happened but recently my microsoft word 2003 has been refusing to overwrite selected text.
If I select a portion of text and I choose to replace it all by typing/pasting new text or deleting with backspace. The new characters/text are appended to the front of the selected text.
Eg.
The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog
selecting 'jumps over' and typing ^(*&^ will result in
The quick brow fox ^(*&^jumps over the lazy dog
The delete key however will delete selected text, but is highly inconvenient.
I have only found this problem with microfsoft word, text editing on all other software is as normal.

Tools, Options, Edit. Tick Typing replaces selection.
