Re: networking two PCs and three Macs

I have 512 ADSL with 4 PC and 2 Macs connected and this works OK for my needs. I use a 4 port ADSL Modem/Router and an 8 port switch both 10/100mbp. Macs are running OS9 (PPC 7600) and OS X (G3), PCs are running XP, W2K, 98se and Linux. All talk to each other via various Protocols (TCP/IP except for OS9 to windows using ftp) and all connect to the internet.

You could use cable connection as well, it all depends on the volume of usage as to what speed connection & download limit you get.

If your Macs are using OS 9 or less and you want browse you Windows PC shares and mount them as share volumes (on your Mac) you will need a 3rd party application, most commonly DAVE (licence purchase required) is used, or just setup ftp sharing. Otherwise OS X can see Windows shares when the correct settings are tweaked, all builtin to OSX.

For the technical "how to" details there are heaps of websites on the subject. Do a google and search Microsoft.com for windows Apple.com for OS X/9 file sharing or networking tips.

Cheers
Erik
