Networking 98 and XP machines (3 posts)

I am trying to connect the XP and the 98 computers I have via network and i use a router.

The 98 computer gets a very different IP address and I dont know how to correct it according to the XP and the routers..

Please help If possible

Set up internet connection sharing on the XP box. This will set the ip address on the XP machine to 192.168.0.1 and turn on basic dhcp services. Set the the 98 box to obtain an ip address automatically. Boot the XP box first, and they should connect happily. Of course, they must both be in the same workgroup, and the defaults are different for the two OS's, so you must set one the same as the other.

It sounds like one of the PCs isn't getting an IP address from the router - most routers will hand out addresses starting with 192.168.x.x or perhaps 10.x.x.x, so if you aren't getting addresses in those ranges you will get an "automatic private IP address" starting with 169.254.x.x - this generally occurs when there is no network connectivity.

I would assign the network card in the problem PC a fixed IP address in the correct range (somewhere in the middle of the router's DHCP range where it won't conflict e.g. 192.168.0.30 if it is handing out addresses from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.100) and see if I could ping the router or the other PC.
