i'm considering to replace my IBM X40 hard drive for a SSD. and wondering if that's gonna speed up the windows boot up.
i found this on a online shopping in Taiwan.
PHOTOFAST G-Monster 1.8 IDE 64GB
http://shopping.pchome.com.tw/?mod=item&func=exhibit&IT_NO=DGAG1N-A39724243&SR_NO=DGAG1N&ROWNO=2
it's around $240, freight i would say around $20
a total $ 260 for a 64GB SSD
it says max read 80MB/s, write 45MB/s
if the figures are true, i would bring me double the performance of what i had now.
do you guys think that this is a good option? worth ?

The SSD will definitely give you better load times, and the overall performance should be better than a 7200rpm drive, too, which is great for a laptop. It will also make your laptop run more quietly and a little cooler, so it's more than a performance benefit (might even make it a dash lighter!).
Not sure about the PHOTOFAST brand. I would say to buy a drive locally, but you would pay a little more for an IDE connection as there doesn't seem to be to many out there.
Whether it's worth it or not depends on how much you value performance over storage space (unless you're moving up from a much smaller drive eg: 20GB) and also how long you will hold onto the X40 laptop. As all new laptops have SATA now (and are 2.5in instead of 1.8in), you won't be able to use the IDE SSD drive in any new laptop you buy in the future (unless you put it in an external enclosure).
It's a lot to pay for a drive upgrade for an old laptop, but you should see some performance benefits from it. If i had the X40 and wanted to give it more life, i'd go for it.

As Ghost mentions, there is a good chance that a new SSD will give you faster boot times and faster general load times over your standard 7200rpm SATA hard drive. However, the cost per gigabyte is certainly much higher, and the difference in speed is normally not worth the cost, particularly for a drive that is this low in capacity. Also, unless you have a fairly good configuration in your computer, there is a good chance that another component in the computer will act as a bottleneck for the SSD, reducing the chance of seeing improved performance.
The idea of using an IDE connection for SSD sort of defeats the purpose in any case. SSDs are more suitable towards a SATA2 connection, as it provides a much wider throughput bandwidth, allowing the SSD to perform at its maximum potential.
While I'm not able to see the full specifications for this particular SSD, given that it is IDE and it is an unknown brand (which brings up a whole list of other questions), I would definitely steer away from buying such a drive.

Hi guys,
I have actually
Hi guys,
I have actually swapped my dive in x41 to 64GB SSD. First of all all Lenovo x40 and x41 come with 4200RPM PATA HDDs. They are slow as a hell, sequential read/write is about 9MB/s. Comparing this to my new SSD which gives me 75MB/s it was worth to spend any penny on it. It takes 8s to boot MacOS 10.5.1 on my x41 and 27s to boot Windows 7 RC. I've got mine str8 from UK ebay for 149GBP. Another thing: my battery life jumped up by one hour on single charge plus my laptop now is absolutely noiseless. If anyone would be interested in and want some more info (benchmarks etc) I could find that seller in my ebay history. Just drop me an email at madera@tollaut.com
