Setting up a network (4 posts)

I want to connect my ADSL internet connection with 4 pc's and also be able to share files, printers, DVD drive, etc.

The PC's are running Windows 98 (3x) and Windows XP (1x)

I currently have a Netcomm Modem/Router (with 4 Ethernet Ports) connected to my Windows XP PC. Can I simply connect the other 3 PC's to the remaining 3 ports on the router and successfully be able to share BOTH internet and files, printer?? I plan to use one pc to simply be on to serve the printer to the network and as a place to save documents.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Matthew

Good luck,

Re: Setting up a network

Hi Matt,

Without going into specifics you should be able to connect all the computers using the modem/router. Your main problem will be the setting up of software / firewalls to allow for file and print sharing and internet access. I am a bit worried about the internet access for the win 98 computers, but hopefully your router will be have a DHCP server built in and it wont be a problem. Hope this helps. Matt

Re: Setting up a network

It is possible. I have a Netcomm ADSL modem/router 4 ports and a 8 port hub with 6 pc's connected running Xp, W2K, 98se, Linux, Mac OS9 & Mac OS X.

If the netcomm supports DHCP and NAT you shouldn't have a problem. As in previous post firewall config on each PC will be necessary for file sharing. Losts of stuff on this subject just Google and search Microsoft's website for specifics.

Cheers

Erik
