I have an EZ antivirus program that is always "on". I know it is not advisable to have 2 antivirus programs running at the same time, but as a form of second layer protection, can I install another antivirus program (like AVG free edition) that has no turning "on" status?
This way I can use this program to scan my computer periodically, just in case a virus manages to pass through the first active antivirus program.
Thanks

Re: Active and passive antivirus programs
It is not a matter of whether it runs permanently or not, it is the fact that one prog is likely to see the stored virus definitions of the other as an infection, so the two whenever they are run will try to destroy each other. Your best bet would be to use an online scan service, such as Trend Micro's Housecall. Another would be to uninstall one and install the other. Do this say monthly and you should pick up most nasties. I should add that your idea is a good one, as you quite rightly indicate that any one prog is likely to miss something now and then. AVG is "always on" just as is your EZ antivirus/Computer Associates/Vet system.

i would recommend just avoiding these free options altogether. When you become the victim of a virus attack you will be very regretful that you did not just spring for some quality antivirus software. If your data has any value to you, then you should go with a protection plan that has value as well. With price, comes quality that these free offerings just flat out lack.
