Because some idiot at my office didn't set up the normal.dot template correctly, almost every work document I open I have to change the language setting from English US to English Australian. But sometimes when I do this, BOTH 'US' and 'Australian' remain ticked in the top section of the langauges list.
I haven't worked out what specific situations this happens in, and it's not always.
What causes this, and how can I disable US spelling when this happens?
Regards,
Daniel

Re: Multiple spell-check languages
Daniel Just delete the normal.dot file and wally word will use the default settings.
If the fileis not present word will create it for you.

Re: Multiple spell-check languages
Daniel,
Sack him/her. It's always a problem in an office environment. People overwrite the template with their text and all sorts of things.
Seriously, I often download documents for domestic consumption.
I have three options, I have my own normal.dot, I also have placed a language key on my menu bar, I have also set up my own normal 'Style' with the correct language and other settings available to me.
Each option should permit you to have/input the settings that you want.
Hope this helps solve your problem.

Re: Multiple spell-check languages
Gus,
Thanks for your suggestion, but I don't think it answers my question.
It's my understanding that NORMAL.DOT only dictates the settings for a NEW document, not existing documents.
So deleting it would not change the (dual-) language setting in some existing documents, that won't let me change to JUST Australian spelling. Not to mention the work involved in recreating all the special styles stored in our copy of NORMAL.DOT!

Daniel

Re: Multiple spell-check languages
Dan,
I'm revisiting your question.
How does the template become corrupted? If people open the template to create a document there is always a possibility of corruption. However, if they are instructed to use the ctrl-n command, it should open a new document rather than the template itself.
I don't know how they achieved it, but at work they have created a number of templates on a large network (defence) that can be opened for customisation with the writer's details and saved as a personal template, however the save function on the original template has been disabled.
However, my suggestion of a 'language tool' still stands.
Perhaps there are others out there with a better underestanding of the deeper meaning of MS.
Hope you solve the problem.

Re: Multiple spell-check languages
Thanks for the many responses, but everyone seems to be missing my point (perhaps I didn't explain it well enough!).
The problem is not any more with NORMAL.DOT. That template is easily fixed and only affects NEW documents. NORMAL.DOT has NO EFFECT on old documents; once created, the settings from NORMAL.DOT are embedded within the new document, and NORMAL.DOT has no more role to play.
So my problem is with EXISTING documents, which started out life set for English (US) due to the idiot who set up NORMAL.DOT many years ago (I'm new to the company, and have to live with his sins).
When I select everything in the document (Ctrl-A) and change the language to English (Australian), in some documents the 'English (US)' entry remains at the top of the language selection scroll box with a tick beside it, AS WELL AS the 'English (Australian)' entry.
My question is, how to purge the English(US) selection from an EXISTING Word document, leaving only the 'English(Australian)' selection?

Daniel

Re: Multiple spell-check languages
Perhaps you can permanently disable "English - American" by going thru Control Panel>Regional Settings.
As to the template, it may have to be properly created once again and then placed under Administrative priveleges so that it cannot be changed by that annoying person.
The question is leading you to search thru the MS site.

Re: Multiple spell-check languages
Dan,
In response to your latest.
If you have changed the language in the existing document by application of an 'Australian Language' based style and then done a re-check of your spelling, all misspelt words should be corrected.
BUT, I would believe that removal of the 'English US' notification in the language bar may not be possible. However, when going into the document, it should indicate that the 'US' is disabled, or not selected.
Sorry that I can't assist you more.

World culture is on the way to effect each other, mastering one kind of language is too less, so it is critical to learn more languages
I like learning Asian languages and have studied some before. I'm an enthusiast of language learning software along with an audio visual method because it helps very much.
My old language learning software is one of the tools reviewed online that has some troubles and I need to change it for a new software. Do you guys have any recommendations for the greatest language learning program?
Thanks beforehand.
