Direct Wireless Connection? (4 posts)

Is it possible to obtain or build an adapter that connects into an ethernet port and the ethernet LANs port to give the computer a wirless connetion to the rest of the computers on the network?

I have a DSL modem that has two ethernet ports which I use to connect my two computers, as well as the internet. I was hoping to make one wireless cheaply.

Re: Direct Wireless Connection?

Yes.

You can easily purchase such a device. An example is the D-Link DWL-810+ ethernet to wireless converter.

They don't have any price advantage over a wireless LAN adapter, but the fact that they don't need a driver means they can be fitted to devices like printers and game consoles that have ethernet ports and can be installed on PCs running operating systems that you can't get appropriate drivers for make them useful.

Re: Direct Wireless Connection?

John,

Ad-Hoc networking is a way to connect a group of wireless network cards without the need for a wireless access point.

There are several ways you can have a wireless network running. I think the cheapest way would be to get 2 wireless PCI cards. Install 1 card in each PC. Connect only 1 PC to the DSL modem and run the Internet Connection Wizard on that PC. Your other PC will then be able to connect to the 'gateway' PC wirelessly.

home networking with D-Link DI-624 router problems!

I installed D-Link DI-624 router recently to have my laptop connected wirelessly to the cable modem/router.

The laptop (IBM T42) is connected to the network but my problem is I could not 'share' files from my PC or vice versa. The tutorial was not much help.

Meantime I bought a DLink DP-301P+ to share a printer connected to the PC but to no avail.

It seems like my Network is not available at all.

Is there anyone who could help me? How can I find out what my Domain name is?
