Connect to DHCP (3 posts)

How do i connect my workstation to internet using DHCP. I am using Window 2000 pro.

Re: Connect to DHCP

DHCP isn't a way to connect to the internet. It is a way for your PC to be allocated a TCP/IP (internet protocol) address automatically. Your PC needs a unique address so that other computers can send messages to it. That is done by you, but only if you are network administrator, determining what a valid address is that no-one else is using and configuring it, or by your PC being successful in locating a DHCP server and it assigning your PC an address, or by your PC looking for a DHCP server, not finding one, and picking an address that will work on the sort of network that doesn't have a DHCP server.

How all that works horribly messy, so it is organised so that non network administrators don't have to figure out how to get right. You just run the wizard or execute the software or do the setup steps your ISP tells you to do, and, presto, it all works by magic.

How are you trying to connect to the internet that you think you need to get involved with communications protocol internals like DHCP?

Dial up?

ADSL through a modem plugged into your PC?

ADSL on a LAN that has a gateway/router connected to the internet?

Re: Connect to DHCP

DHCP is just a method of obtaining a network connection from a server or router. What network are you connected to and how is the internet modem / connection configured? Normally if you are on a Windows network, the administrator will provide a configuration string or file to enable connection. A few more details?
