does any one know how to fix the folling error message / problem?

whenever i try to open a EXE file i get the following message: "This file does not have a program associated with it for this action. Create an association in the folder options control panel"

how can I fix this? What has caused this? Perhaps a virus?

What is the actual file? An EXEfile is usually a 'program' (or part) and will usually EXEcute the program.

A number of virii do this. Swen.A is one. Just google virus removed exe association. Lots of ideas. Specific removal tools are available for most from the various vendors once identified. Try another AV such as Trendmicro's Housecall - online free service.
