What is a Blu-ray profile? How important is it for a movie experience? Should I pay extra and opt for a 2.0 profile?

There is a lot of hysteria around the Blu-ray profiles. There are three profiles: 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0. The 1.0 is the barebones hardware for playing Blu-ray. Although all standard features work well on this profile, the picture-in-picture video commentary features and content downloading will not work. If your only concern is watching a movie with audio and subtitles, you have no reason to be worried. Profile 1 is now out of production. The most prominent addition in the 1.1 profile is the picture-in- picture function. This profile is also called the Final Standard Profile or BonusView. The profile 2.0 Blu- ray players require an internet connection through Ethernet cable and ample storage space for the player to download and manage content.

There is a profile 3.0 in existence too; however, it is not for Blu-ray video disks. This profile is for audio Blu-ray disks that can be run on players with hardware specifications lower that what is needed for running HD videos. If you feel the movie hasn’t ended unless you have watched all the special features, you should buy the profile 2.0 Bu-ray players. This is the only case in which you would want to shell out the extra money.

The latest quarterly data report from the National Bureau of Statistics showed China's gross domestic product rising 9.5% y/y during the second quarter -- a touch above market expectations of 9.4% -- while the key industrial output growth indicator surged 15.1% y/y in June, far outpacing both May's 13.3% reading and the market's expectation of a 13.1% rise.
