Sound problem while playing games (3 posts)

I installed Unreal Tournament 2003 on my PC. All is well except the sound. I am missing the sound and taunts sorely. Also when I play online it affects my performance in case of crowded game rooms and large arenas where I need the sound to know if an opponent is shooting from far off.

There could be a problem with the DirectX version you are using. UT 2003 requires DirectX 8.1. It is freely available on the Microsoft Windows website. There should be a direct setup file in your game disk as well. Usually the game itself determines and installs the required version of direct. If you want to check which version of DirectX is running on your PC, go to the run program option and type “dxdiag”. Alternatively, you can run dxdiag.exe by navigating through C:Program FilesDirectX. Using this tool you can see all the information about the direct running on your PC and run various tests to check for conflicts.

I was facing a similar problem that vanished when I played around with the BIOS settings a bit. You can enter the BIOS by pressing the “delete” key while the computer is booting up. Here are the settings I used:

Enable the option "Assign IRQ to VGA"

Disable "VGA Palette Snoop"

Disable "Video Bios Shadow" and video memory address shadowing

"AGP Aperture" should be half of your RAM

Ease "AGP Speed" down to two-third

Disable overclocking if it is enabled

Just so that you don’t blame me if something goes wrong, write down the previous settings of your BIOS so that you can revert to them later. Unless you save the new settings in the BIOS (a

dialog box will appear when you try to exit), they will not come into effect.
