Volume adjustment window on screen (1 post)

I turned on my pc this morning and immediately encountered a series of problems with both pc (cordless mouse not working) and monitor. I've tried switching it off (the monitor was reluctant at first) and now have got to a point where the pc itself is working okay but there's a permanent display of the Volume control adjustment box. The adjustment controls on the monitor are not responding. I've tried unplugging all the monitor cables and plugging them back in but the Volume display still appears. Anyone have any suggestions how to fix this? The monitor is a flatscreen, about five years old and in everyday use. Thanks!
