Yes you heard me right. Free Internet… if you happen to live in the Domus apartment complex in Perth. If not, sorry, but no free Internet for you.
For those who are now upset at the idea that they aren't receiving free Internet, I would spare you the details, but they are simply too good to pass up. Not only will Domus residents be receiving free Internet, but said Internet will be offered on a naked DSL plan with included voice.
Oh, and it's VDSL2 — that's a potential speed of 100Mbps downstream and 50Mbps upstream.
Oh, and it has a usage quota of 20GB on peak, 30GB off peak (uploads are counted).
Oh, and did we mention it is free?
No, it's not some zany scheme by the Government to draw attention away from what can only be described as the two biggest broadband-related screw-ups of 2008. It is, in fact, the initiative of none other than iiNet, the lovable ISP whose ads feature the even-more-lovable Finn, the Irish guy who loves calling his Nan.
While the rest of Australia is arguing about the National Broadband Network or Internet filtering, iiNet is going ahead and undertaking its first trials of VDSL2, the successor to ADSL that easily surpasses the speeds suggested by any tender for the NBN. Of course, it does require FTTK (Fibre to the Kerb), which most Australians are unlikely to be familiar with in the near future, but it seems a few lucky Perth residents finally have something to cure their boredom. That's right — really fast Wikipedia.
Oh, and if you were about to rush out and purchase one of these apartments, you had better hurry — there are only a few left.
