The Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1 download is small at 11MB, when compared to previous IE downloads. The setup procedure includes a spyware check and a download of any critical updates for the browser. Once the initial setup has been completed, it’s necessary to reboot to complete installation. After the computer has been restarted and Internet Explorer starts for the first time, you’re greeted with a new welcome screen. For the time being this screen is focused towards Web developers and power users rather than the general public, as IE8 is still a beta release. Another feature present in IE8 Beta 1 is the “Emulate IE7” feature. This should allow sites that are visually broken in the new rendering style of IE8 to be viewed successfully in IE7. The Quick Tabs feature found in IE7 continues on, with the other noticeable addition being the renaming of the Links bar – now called Favourites. This is logical, given that Internet Explorer has always used the Favourites title for storing sites. Domain names are now highlighted in the address bar, presumably as an anti-phishing feature. Many pages currently fail to render properly under IE8, due to the extensive changes in programming.
