Zones provide focussed content from PC World and leading technology partners.Fujitsu has won a contract to manufacture future chips in S3 Graphics Co's range of Chrome graphics processors, the two companies said Wednesday. Awarding of the contract is an important step towards launch of the chips, which are expected to be much more powerful than the company's current graphics chips.
The chips will be produced on Fujitsu's 90-nanometer production line in Mie prefecture in western Japan, the companies said in a joint statement. Fujitsu said the production line has advantages because chips made with its technology can run faster and use less power than those made on similar lines operated by competitors.
Samples of the new Chrome chips made on the line have a 75 percent higher performance than earlier S3 Graphics chips in benchmark tests, the companies said.
S3, in which Taiwan's Via Technologies holds a large stake, said it plans to continue its foundry relationship with Fujitsu for future products.
