Edius is an efficient real-time editor that offers outstanding performance and few top-notch innovations, but overall features-wise it’s behind the pack, adding tools in this version that other applications gained years ago. The effects system is a mess and you’d probably have to be using one of the more esoteric formats to see a benefit from using Edius over Final Cut, Premiere or Media Composer.

Corel VideoStudio Pro X2 has a slightly better range of features than Adobe's Premiere Elements 7, and VideoStudio's tools are easier to see than Elements'. Elements still has a few unique features that we like — for example, better timeline features. We'd say VideoStudio X2 is the better choice if you have an underpowered PC, and Elements gets the nod for those with fast PCs.

The upgrades to Adobe Premiere Elements 7 didn't strike us as very compelling. We like the addition of downloadable walkthroughs and templates, the Smart Tags, and the ability to sync files without thinking about it. But the interface needs some housecleaning, Elements' integration with Photoshop.com is pretty thin, and its integration with third-party services even thinner. More Webbiness is fine, but what we really want is more YouTubiness.

Simulate: Illuma is a great low-cost selection of plug-ins for motion-graphics artists and other stylised work.

Sony Vegas Movie Studio 9 may not be as comprehensive as its Platinum brother, but it remains an extremely solid offering for novice videographers. If you'd like to add some pizzazz to your movies without breaking your bank account, it will definitely keep you satisfied.

Despite the price reduction, Avid Media Composer still isn’t cheap. It’s around £150 more expensive than Adobe CS3 Production Premium, and you can buy Final Cut Studio 2 for under £700 — less than half the price. The latter may lack Blu-ray burning abilities, but if you’re a Mac user on a budget, Avid’s new pricing is still going to look a little steep, even if you do get a lot for your money.

Studio Ultimate 12 has more features than any other consumer-level video editor, but I still prefer Adobe Premiere Elements 4 because of its more elegant interface and superior stability. (That product doesn't yet support AVCHD editing, however.)

Cyberlink has managed to refine and build upon its entry-level editing suite, delivering a product that will appeal to beginners and semi-professionals alike. With the addition of the DirectorZone database, its value is almost limitless.

If ever you've wanted to get into home video editing then expect to be welcomed with open arms. Movie Edit Pro 14.0 Plus is exactly what you need, and often more so. It's a truly fantastic package.

We'd still advise most people to buy a full-service video editor, but Pinnacle VideoSpin is a good option if all you want to do is dress up clips before uploading them to YouTube.

This is a feature-rich and user-friendly package that should suit amateurs and semi-professionals alike.

With iMovie becoming a dumbed-down shadow of its former self, Final Cut Express is now the Mac's best video editing option for amateur enthusiasts. Enthusiastically recommended.
